Hakama
 The hakama is the skirt-like pants worn by samurai. While the hakama
is often worn by those who practice aikido, jujutsu, iaido,
kendo, and kyudo, it is also traditional dress for formal
occasions still today in modern Japan.The seven folds in the hakama
(five in the front and two in the back) is alleged to represent the
following qualities of the samurai:
- Yuki -- courage, valor, bravery
- Jin -- humanity, charity, benevolence
- Gi -- justice, righteousness, integrity
- Rei -- etiquette, courtesy, civility (also means bow/obeisance)
- Makoto -- sincerity, honesty, reality
- Chugi -- loyalty, fidelity, devotion
- Meiyo -- honor, credit, glory; also reputation, dignity, prestige
Both the striped and solid colored formal hakama offered here
are made using traditional sakizome technique just like the most
expensive kimono and obi. With sakizome
(pre-dyeing), the individual threads are first colored by dyeing, then
woven to create the fabric patterns.
Refer to the

a shorter version of the kimono, and for obi (sash or
belt), to wear with hakama.
