Hanten
Similar to the happi, the
traditional coat or everyday jacket called hanten was
worn by chonin (townspeople)
during the Edo Period. This
kimono-style short, slip-over coat often featured the employer's
crest or name on the back, an early form of advertising. The hanten
is still worn in modern-day Japan, often as casual wear for home or
recreation.
(Don't
forget to look for haragake (apron) and momohiki (pants)
traditionally worn with happi listed in the
Accessories
section.)
